A generational perspective on gender equality at work in China
Abstract
In the international system, a generation is defined as a group of individuals who live at a particular time and share common characteristics. Their study is referred to as generational theory. The basic study is considered as "Strauss-Howe's theory of generations", which characterises them in terms of archetypes (the unconscious side of the individual, which indirectly influences his or her life). Generations in China can also be characterised in terms of certain archetypes but considering the specifics of Chinese state development, history, and traditions. As mentioned earlier, each cohort (group) is united by a specific view of certain societal issues, including the distribution of gender roles. Each generation perceived the status and role of women and men in society differently, including in China. The most interesting to study and compare in terms of gender equality in the PRC were generation X and Y, born and growing up during important historical developments that completely changed the economic, political, and social system, including the employment sphere.
