Artistic examination of a male portrait of the Russian school of the late 18th - early 19th centuries

Abstract

The article is an attribution assessment of the late XVIII - early XIX century Russian school’s portrait «Old Man» from the LCFA ASG. The portrait is a copy of «Saint Jerome» by the German painter Balthazar Denner (1685-1749) from the State Hermitage Museum. It served as a “reference” painting by students of the Imperial Academy of Arts numerous times at the turn of the XVIII - XIX centuries. Amongthe numerous copies of that period was this artwork in ASG collection. The signature of Vasily Tropinin(1776-1857) on the portrait appeared because of actions of an unscrupulous art dealer of the XIX century.
