Russian-Chechen relations in the first half of the 19th century

Abstract

The article deals with the turning point in the development of Russian-Chechen relations - the first half of the 19th century. This is the period when Russia abandoned allied relations with the Chechens and switched to military-colonial methods of subjugating Chechnya. Cruel colonial methods were used - Chechens were expelled from the plains to the mountains, their land was confiscated, there was a military-economic blockade, and all these punitive expeditions used by the tsarist authorities in Chechnya provoked armed resistance of the Chechens. This resistance became an important component of the national liberation movement of the North Caucasian highlanders in the first half of the 19th century. It is also noted that all attempts by the Chechens to reach a mutually acceptable compromise in joining Chechnya to Russia by peaceful, agreed means ended in failure.
