The role of early medieval queens in the formation of the English state

Abstract

The article examines the influence of the English wives of kings in the context of the general process of formation of the original English statehood. The ways of implicit and explicit interaction between the Queen and the nascent English society in the political, religious and cultural sphere are revealed. A wide range of early medieval hagiographic and act sources are involved for analysis.
