Reflection of the ideas of the Turkish philosopher, Zia Gekalp in the concepts of Kemalism, the problem of a reasonable renewal of East and West, the attempts of the first president of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, to introduce a Westernized civilization into Turkish society in the 1920s and 1930s. The article shows the struggle of Westernists and traditionalists, notes the appeals of soil scientists to preserve national traditions, study the history of Muslim peoples and state institutions in order to more easily adapt them to the new conditions of life in modernity, because only the relationship between traditionalism and modernism can correspond to the realities of a particular society and era, whereas Westerners called for transferring to national soil European values.
