The migration factor in the political agenda of modern Spain
Abstract
This article analyzes the evolution of the migration policy of the Kingdom of Spain and identifies the positive and negative political consequences of these processes. The greatest attention is paid to the problem of illegal migration, as well as the criminogenic attitudes of immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa. Among all European countries, Spain stands out for its most loyal attitude to migrants and refugees arriving on its territory. Migrants play an important role in Spanish society. First, they dilute the labor market, reduce tension in it, and can even take on jobs that native Spaniards would not take on. In addition, they restore the population level, which is falling due to a decrease in the birth rate and an aging population. Nevertheless, a great deal of effort is needed to integrate "foreigners" into Spanish society, which can be hindered by mutual xenophobia and racism. For 2021, Spain is still searching for a compromise solution on migration issues, as related problems continue to arise, which also require immediate solutions and adequate activities of the Spanish government together with citizens. Madrid, based on pan-European values, is trying to find a balance between the rights of its citizens, the rights of refugees and immigrants, and the national interests of the country.
